A hand decorated walnut keepsake gift, accompanied by the original story of Montgomery Mouse.
Our lucky walnuts are made from real walnut shells.
Grown on a magnificent tree at Warracott Farm in Devon, and crafted by hand in our studio.
Read the story of a remarkable mouse, and how a lucky walnut tree saved his life and taught his fellow mice a valuable lesson.
– “Montgomery Mouse was neither meek nor timid. And despite his small round ears, long brown tail, and pink whiskered nose,
he was as unmousey as a mouse could be.”

The Legend
Across the Moors a legend has passed through generations. About a magical tree that stands proud and tall on the edge of a farm. A walnut tree. One that has withstood storms, gales, and floods. It is said that the nuts shed from this tree are so glorious, that each one is bestowed with untold luck for those that find one.
The wardship of this tree has now been entrusted to us.
We are the purveyors and guardians of
The Lucky Walnut Tree of Dartmoor.

About Us
Arriving at Warracott Farm
What a stroke of luck it was, when we first moved to Warracott Farm, to find the most beautiful and
gnarly tree we’d ever seen. A walnut tree! At least 30 meters tall. We had never had a walnut tree
before. And were totally unprepared for the autumn. But much less for the importance that this tree
had on the local area. The lucky walnut tree was something that we must look after and keep safe.
So says the legend.
When the winds came, our tree shook mounds of beautiful fat glorious nuts onto the ground. We
didn’t have the slightest clue what to do with the nuts we harvested. After a little bit of trial and
error (and a poorly tummy from storing wet walnuts a little too long in a plastic bag – NOT advised!)
we finally learnt how to make the most of the yearly feast. After they’ve dried, our Warracott
Walnuts are scattered across yoghurts, salads, and stir fries. Baked into cakes. And presented in big
bowls throughout Christmas with an assortment of nutcrackers for any guests to help themselves.
And we ALWAYS make sure to leave plenty at the base of the tree for the squirrels, woodpeckers,
foxes, stoats, and most importantly…Montgomery Mouse.
Gilding the Walnut
But…we couldn’t bear to compost the shells. They are a beautiful product of nature. And you will know if you’ve ever looked at one closely, but of all the nuts they seem the wisest. Knobbled
and lined, each nut looks as if it has been through quite a life! Some are small and perfectly formed.
Others are a little bit on the wonk. There are tall ones. Short and fat ones. And some that even twist
into slightly askew shapes. And they are so tactile! Instead of sending them to the heap, we started to
play about with making them into Christmas decorations. After all. They are lucky. And what better
gift to give than a little bit of luck to those we love the most.
We love Christmas at the farm. And decorating the house is the best part. In doing so we use nature as
much as possible when decking the halls. We use fresh greenery cuttings from the garden, dried corn
stalks from the veg patch, and oven dried oranges. So it made sense to add a walnut or two to the
displays. After a lot of bad ideas, and some really awful results, we finally created these jewels!
Beautiful and shimmering, they retain the beauty of the original nut but also look pretty stunning
hanging on a tree.
Every time we finish a walnut we think it’s the best one we’ve ever made. And it is a wrench to see
them leave our studio. We’ve stopped short of naming them…it seemed a step just a little too far. But
we hope that wherever they end up they are treasured and admired for what they are naturally, and
for how we’ve dressed them to be the best they can be. But most importantly, we hope that the luck
these walnuts bring pass on to you and your precious people. It is in the sharing of the walnuts that
make the magic, after all.
But what about the mouse?
When we were happily playing with walnuts, the story of Montgomery started to form.
And rather than a long and complicated book that would require years of attention, he fit perfectly
into a short story. A tale. A fable. A way to keep the legend alive. His story sat next to the walnuts
like the final puzzle piece. So we wrote his tail, and he is our gift to you with your walnut. A little mousey
luck and fortune in these topsy-turvey times.
